Househelp comes in many forms such as:

• Security

• Cook

• Cleaner

• Nanny

1.  Try to employ somone so that there is  an accountability trail.  Basically try to employ someone who knows someone in the family.  At the bare minimum find out exactly where the person lives.  Although this seems extreme it could save you a ton of stress in the future if any problems arise.

2. Pay at the end of the month.  Do not give advances unless it is money you can potentially afford to lose.

3. Be prepared to repeat things a few times before they get the hang of it.

4. Speak slowly.  Sometimes we have a tendency to speak really fast (especially me) and assume that the person understands what we are saying.

5. The person is human so treat them accordingly.

Salary

Salary is a big issue when it comes to employing househelp  but I am willing to potentially put my neck on the line and give you a rough idea of compensation.

A decent salary for househelp is somewhere between 200 – 600 cedis a month (this is a rough guide) depending on what they are doing.  Paying someone way over the odds does not necessarily equate to them doing a better job.  This is just the Ghana way.  Although at the same time I am not an ogar and therefore I do believe in giving out extra incentives along the way if I feel the need to.

The main points to take away are keep your relationship clear, agree the days and hours of work and get an accountabiliy trail and it should work out just fine for you.
